History

For centuries, the Saratoga, Wyoming region was a destination for Native Americans who came for the area’s natural hot springs. As American frontiersmen pushed westward in the late 19th century, it quickly became a hub for settlers, trappers, and loggers. The Sterrett brothers settled the land that would become Brush Creek Ranch in 1884, building the original homestead with logs cut, skid, and hauled from the adjacent area which is now part of Medicine Bow National Forest. The spirits of hard work, recreation, and adventure are prevalent in the archives of days past at the Ranch. This heritage is still apparent in the current incarnation of the land used as a luxury guest ranch, and visitors will find homage paid to these ideas all around them, meshed seamlessly with a plethora of modern amenities.

Brush Creek Ranch was first acquired in 2008 by Bruce White, Chairman and CEO of White Lodging, one of the most respected names in the hotel industry, and operator of award-winning premium hotel brands across the country. The White family has since acquired additional historic Ranchlands and unveiled new luxury ranch resorts where the spirit of hard work, recreation, and adventure are as prevalent today as in the archives of days past. The family’s vision unfolds as a highly refined 30,000-acre destination, striking a perfect balance between active outdoor recreation, shared experiences, personal renewal, economic sustainability, and preservation of the Western way of life.

The Setting

Enjoy some of the most celebrated freestone fishing waters on the planet, here in Saratoga, Wyoming.

Across the North Platte River, Brush Creek, the Encampment River and their major tributaries, we offer over 20 miles of the most exclusive private river access.

Explore the waters of the North Platte River by drift boat or waders, or choose the still waters of our well-stocked ponds, which provide an enjoyable style of fishing for all ages, in most weather conditions.

If you're looking for healthy brown and rainbow trout, the near-endless blue-ribbon waters will have you returning again and again!

Snaking its way through gaping canyons and low-lying valleys, this river system is one of the most iconic fly fishing destinations in North America.

The Fishing

There's no 'best' time of year to fish here – it's always good! This is due to the rolling elevations and good offering of fisheries. However, there are a few months that can be particularly good on the water.

Our Orvis-endorsed guides will point you to the right spot at the right time and will give you attentive, personalized service – whether you're a beginner or just need local tips on where to fish and when.

Mid-March to mid-May
Warm May temperatures melt the high country snow and here in the Platte River Valley we fish right through the runoff.

At this time, where the water is big, most fishing is done by boat. We target the banks and slower stretches, and use brightly-colored streamers and large nymphs.

You'll also witness the prolific Salmon Fly hatch on the North Platte. These large aquatic insects hatch for up to two weeks and make up a huge portion of our trouts' yearly protein intake.

June
Runoff typically peaks during the first week, before water levels drop and clarity improves.

Mid-to-late June is a very versatile time to fish the valley, with float and wade options, and the ability to throw nymphs, dries and streamers within any given day.

You'll enjoy caddis, yellow sallies, PMDs and the famed green drakes in late June.

July to August
Summer is here, water temperatures rise and fishing slows down. When the water level is low, we only fish in the mornings.

It's actually a great time of year to escape the heat and head to the high country to find cooler water – and more active fish!

Tricos start to hatch in prolific proportions on the North Platte and Encampment, and hoppers, beetles and ants become a staple in the trouts' diet.

Float fishing becomes less viable as water levels drop and we start to focus mainly on wade fishing.

A typical day starts with the trico spinner fall where hundreds of fish can be focused on the surface offering technical – but rewarding – dry-fly fishing.

In order to protect the fishery, fishing stops altogether when water temperatures reach 68 degrees. This doesn't happen all the time and some years have offered very productive fishing during these weeks.

Mid-August to September
Water temperatures begin dropping and the fishing is outstanding – if consistency is what you're looking for, then Fall in our valley is the time to visit!

Hopper-dropper rigs are the go-to right now and the focus is mostly on wade fishing the upper stretches of the North Platte and its tributaries.

By mid-September, the trico hatch starts to wind down and you'll see blue-winged olives (BWO). Terrestrials will remain until late September.

October to November
At this time, the main concern is the weather. Early to mid-October typically offers mild weather with the odd snowstorm, cold nights and daytime highs in the 60s.

Come mid-October, it can be a gamble, but fishing can remain productive until the water freezes.

Fall is time for the Brown Trout to spawn and this delivers great fishing – the fish are preparing for the spawn and looking for big meals, thus offering some excellent streamer fishing.

All fish sense the colder temperatures and know winter is around the corner, causing them to feed heavily in preparation.

We say that this time of year 'isn't for the faint of heart', but it's some of our guides' and locals' favorite time of year to enjoy the sport!

Visitor Reviews

Dont just take our word for it, see what visitors like you say...

This was absolutely wonderful

We knew we arrived at the ranch because of the greeting from the wonderful views. This place is 100% top notch lodging, service, and food. All of the staff was friendly, attentive, and accommodating. The ranch has plenty of activities every day to tire you out and then some. The activities I participated in were, the mountain biking, hiking, ropes, horseback riding, floating down river, rock climbing, shooting, archery, and of course Fly fishing (twice). This ranch kept me so active, I loved it all. The only thing i would change or try to improve is the food. I thought the food should've been a bit better given the prices for the lodge and spa at brush creek ranch. I would still recommend this place to everyone, what a great way to spend my vacation.
