Since 1919, the award-winning C Lazy U luxury guest ranch has been celebrated around the world for its rich history, rustic elegance, legendary cuisine and signature 5-Spur Service.

There is something for everyone at C Lazy U - kids enjoy adventure and discovery, while adults do everything they want - or nothing at all. Corporations and groups can also enjoy this all-inclusive ranch as a simple and secluded retreat destination.

Good time to go

The ranch is open all year round, and it's never a bad time to visit.

Children at the Lodge

Great for children aged 3 and over

For more than half a century, experienced ranch counselors have refined a program that teaches children and teens skills that build confidence and independence. The program revolves around horseback riding every day. Kids aged 3-5 are given pony rides, while older kids are taken on guided trail rides and given lessons in horsemanship according to their age and skill level.

Between rides, the kids flock to the Patio House to swim, play table tennis or air hockey, shoot pool or play outside. Counselors are with the children all day to supervise their activities, even during nap time for the little ones. Archery, scavenger hunts, Capture-the-Flag, volleyball, rowing boats, fishing, cookouts, hay rides and a carnival are just some of the added children’s activities. Winter offers ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tubing and sledding. There is also a supervised children's center with reading, games, and arts and crafts. The Teen Program includes off-site trips such as hiking and overnight camping, white water rafting, and heading off to a local rodeo.

There is a balance of family time and adventure time: during breakfast and after dinner, families spend time together, but the kids are 'on the ranch' for the remainder of the day. At C Lazy U, kids have the vacation of a lifetime and are kept busy from sunrise to sunset. Adults can truly relax during their vacation on the ranch, knowing that the kids are happily occupied.

History

The ranch was homesteaded by original pioneers in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The ranch had been run as a guest ranch since 1919 under the 'F Slash Ranch' name until 1946, when its name was changed to the C Lazy U.

Over its 100 year history as a guest ranch, C Lazy U has only had four differnt ownership groups, which has allowed it to maintain its legacy and western traditions.

The Setting

Over 8,500 acres of historic ranch property, filled with mountain meadows, meandering Willow Creek and aspen stands that will make your jaw drop. 200 horses graze in the pastures below the main lodge, while elk feed from ridge to ridge above you. Pronghorn can often be seen in the sage flats along with moose hiding in the willows. 2 miles of Willow Creek flow through the property and is where we get our C Lazy U name.

Endless dry fly flats, cutbanks and plunge pools line the riverbanks. Where you can expect the average fish in the 12-14-inch range, with a healthy amount of fish in the 18+ range. A few every year caught above 22 inches!

The Fishing

April kicks off our fishing season as the snow melts, and the fish are hungry. Chilly mornings and 50-degree weather during the day nymphing the plunge pools and deep runs are your best bet for fish in spring.

May through June we head to the tailwaters as runoff kicks in. Willow Creek, and the Headwaters of the Colorado fish well at this time. We also head to Rocky Mountain National Park to fish high mountain streams with dry dropper rigs. This is also typically when we catch some of the bigger browns in the river. They come out from the cutbanks and the dirty water allows us more opportunity to get them to eat.

July after peak runoff is one of our favorite times to fish as we have warm days, cold water and feisty trout. Depending on flows we can fish dry droppers to nymph rigs and BIG flies. 3x and 4x are your best friends during this time as some of our bigger fish are caught during this time.

August is best described as our “dog days of summer”. It is hot and the water is typically low. Expect long casts and small flies. The avid angler will have good days as long as you capitalize on opportunity. This is the perfect time for half day fishing, early mornings and early lunch, late afternoon and evening is also good for dry fly fishing. Sight fishing is most productive as well as casting under trees.

September and October once the heat cools off are great time for fish. In late September expect to see some of the bigger browns in the river starting to stage for the spawn. This is a great time to fish a streamer or wait for a great caddis hatch. The rainbows will be on the feed as well eating the eggs coming off the brown trout. Be careful wading around and leave Redds and spawning fish alone.

The Best of the West

This is without a doubt the best of the West! You can't get better than C Lazy U the Staff the Food and of course the beauty that surrounds you at every turn. The Horseback riding experience alone was worth the trip! This is an amazing experience for 6 year olds to 99! We went sledding, horseback riding, saw a Mama Moose and baby while we were on horseback. Ice skating and of course 5 star dining experience.
