Environment

Triple Creek Ranch is nestled amidst over four million acres of Montana's National Forest Service land, and we deeply value the preservation of this wilderness and its wildlife. We believe that responsible environmental stewardship is essential, and we're committed to doing our part to protect this magnificent land for future generations.

Owners Barbara & Craig Barrett are dedicated stewards of this land. They have taken significant steps to protect the environment, including dedicating thousands of acres of our sister ranch, the CB, to conservation in partnership with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. This land remains undeveloped, serving as a wildlife sanctuary for elk, deer, bison, birds, and other creatures. Additionally, they have even purchased neighboring properties with homes solely to return the land entirely back to nature. They have also planted over 100,000 trees to support reforestation, and practice active wildfire mitigation. All fencing on property is wildlife friendly. Certified weed-free hay is fed to livestock, and the ranch participates in an on-going program of noxious weed extermination. Pasture rotation, stream bank restoration and stream bed rehabilitation are among the other efforts that help preserve the local ecosystem.

At Triple Creek Ranch, we have implemented several sustainable practices. In partnership with 'Clean World', we recycle bar soaps and offer shampoo, conditioner, & body wash in refillable containers, and utilize environmentally friendly, low-phosphorus cleaning aids, soaps & detergents. Additionally, guests can participate in a voluntary towel re-hang, reuse program, and we provide guests with refillable aluminum bottles instead of plastic water bottles. We also utilize bags made from recycled materials in our kitchen, gift shop, and for promotional events. We also have an award-winning gravity-fed irrigation system for our pastures, and have switched to energy-efficient light fixtures. To reduce our carbon footprint, promote biodiversity, and contribute to a healthier ecosystem we also utilize our orchards & garden as well as an apiary at both ranch locations, allowing us to provide our guests with fresh 'farm to table' honey, ciders, & produce.

Community

Triple Creek Ranch has established a college scholarship program to assist employees and their children with school expenses. Merit-based Scholarships are also awarded to students from Darby High School.

Conservation

Triple Creek Ranch has planted over 100,000 Ponderosa Pine seedlings to promote regrowth following area wildfires, and to maintain the area’s natural beauty. All fencing on property is wildlife friendly. Certified weed-free hay is fed to livestock, and the ranch participates in an on-going program of noxious weed extermination. Pasture rotation, stream bank restoration and stream bed rehabilitation are among the other efforts that help preserve the local ecosystem.

Triple Creek Ranch has established a 25,000-acre conservation district with perpetual conservation easements. The resort also eliminated 176 subdivided lots and placed that land in a conservation district to protect the wildlife inhabiting the area. An active contributor to wildlife research, Triple Creek Ranch has aided the Owl Research Institute, Montana Peregrine Institute, Raptors of the Rockies, Wind River Bear Institute, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

History

The original 40 acres of the ranch belonged to Reverend and Mrs. House from New York State. He was a minister in Conner and she taught at the little red schoolhouse on Piquett Creek Road. Both were also teachers at the school in Darby and they raised four children in the original house located at the center of Triple Creek Ranch.

The first fifty acres of Triple Creek Ranch was purchased and developed by a Michigan industrialist in 1982. Triple Creek Ranch served as his personal retreat for the first four years and then was developed into “Triple Creek Ranch, a Montana Hideaway”, officially opening reservations to the public in the fall of 1986. In 1993, he sold the property and business to the current owners, a couple who, as frequent guests, had fallen in love with the ranch. They have since infused the resort with a passion and enthusiasm that have made it the elegant Montana high country resort it is today. In 1996, Triple Creek Ranch became a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux Association.

Over the years the ranch has continued to evolve with new cabins, expanded facilities and exhilarating new ways to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us.

Kristen Snavely began at Triple Creek Ranch as a seasonal Wrangler in 1997, quickly becoming ranch 'Forman' - Manager of Wranglers & Maintenance for over 20 years. In 2018 she finally accepted the position of Assistant General Manager, and ultimately became Co-General Manager in 2022.

Molly Smith began as a Triple Creek Ranch Intern in 2007, staying on as an Assistant Pastry Chef, followed by Assistant Dining Room Manager until 2012. After time abroad in the UK as a Hospitality Consultant, she rejoined TCR as Co-General Manager 2014-2018, and 2022-present.

The Setting

The Lodge and private guest cabins at Triple Creek Ranch are nestled in the Bitterroot Mountain range of the western Montana Rockies. The West Fork (tributary) of the Bitterroot River lies at the bottom of our driveway, and is home to five species of stream bred trout.

The Fishing

As a premier fly fishing destination, Triple Creek Ranch is an ORVIS endorsed fishing lodge where guests enjoy unfettered access to a full range of complimentary fly fishing gear and equipment, fly casting lessons, two stocked trout ponds on property, and bank fishing on our private sister ranch available upon request with maps provided for the best fishing 'hot-spots'. Guided float trips with experienced anglers on the Bitterroot River & Salmon River are also available, & have become a favorite activity for many of our guests.

Starting with the Skwala fly hatch in March/April, the trout become active and bountiful right into summer when the climate is dry and sunshine is abundant.

Summer temperatures range from the mid-70 to 90s F becoming cooler in the evening. The Bitterroot River, and its floatable tributaries the East and West Fork, are freestone, blue-ribbon rivers. Located between the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains, the Bitterroot River runs south to north for approximately 86 miles before emptying into the Clark Fork of the Columbia River. Snowfields from the highest mountain peaks in western Montana feed the river throughout the summer, keeping it floatable and the fishery healthy. Native west slope cutthroats and bull trout are here, as well as stream-bred rainbows, brook and brown trout.

Rivers are fishable well into fall. Clear blue skies are not uncommon, combined with colors of fall, snow-capped mountains and a few flakes in the valley can be an invigorating outdoor fly-fishing experience for any angler.

 

Fly Fishing Always on the Bitterroot:

Whether a beginner, intermediate or expert, float with an experienced guide down the Bitterroot River, or its West Fork or East Fork for a memorable day of trout fishing. The Guides at Fly Fishing Always are renown in the valley for their historic and extensive knowledge of these waters. These guides are experts on the hatches and proper flies to use, whether it’s an old faithful such as Big Freddy or whatever it might take to catch the big fish. In order to protect and preserve the stream-bred trout of the Bitterroot’s blue-ribbon waters, all fishing is catch and release. 

 

Rawhide Outfitters on the Salmon River:

In July and August Rawhide Outfitters guides specialize in drift and wade fly fishing, dry or wet fly fishing and/or spin casting, depending on personal preference. You will drift through a lovely section of the Salmon River, occasionally stopping to wade good runs. Anglers will tend to average 20 to 40 fish per day, rainbow and cutthroat trout ranging from 12 to 18 inches. Catch and Release is encouraged. Your guides will provide lunch for you to enjoy riverside.

Summer Trout Fly Fishing & Spin Casting on the Salmon River with Rawhide Outfitters is available in July and August.

In the fall, Steelhead fishing on the Salmon River is an unforgettable adventure! Rawhide Outfitters’ guides have years of experience to ensure the highest possible success rate using a wide variety of both traditional and modern methods. The hatchery steelhead returns have been very successful with a strong native run as well. Guides use dory-type drift boats equipped with heaters. Guides will instruct you with a variety of fishing methods, such as trolling plugs or bait and fly fishing, depending upon the preference and skill level of each guest. Your guides will provide lunch for you to enjoy riverside.

Steelhead Fishing on the Salmon River is available Mid-October through November, and in April.

Triple Creek Ranch’s wine cellar is a state-of-the-art showroom and a Wine Spectator, “Best of, Award of Excellence” winner for 12 consecutive years, since 2012, following several initial years as an “Award of Excellence” winner.

The beautiful glass-encased room, finished with handcrafted South American mahogany racks, greets guests as they enter the rooftop lounge. The cellar is home to everything from single vineyard Chardonnays to mature Bordeaux, and eclectic red blends. Our expansive wine list appeals to a variety of tastes, from novice oenophiles to connoisseurs. It features more than 600 fine wines and champagnes, representing major growing regions, with a focus on California, the Pacific Northwest and France.

Throughout the year we offer special events for wine enthusiasts, including Vintner Weekends featuring seminars by well-known winemakers and tasting dinners with wine pairings.

Your Chef, Jacob Leatherman

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jacob Leatherman found his calling to cuisine while an english student at Ohio State University. He enrolled in the renown French Culinary institute in New York City and embraced his new career with passion. Upon graduation he worked in French restaurants in Cincinnati, but the siren song of mountain rivers called to this avid fly-fisherman and prompted a move to the Rocky Mountains. He secured a position as Sous Chef at the Home Ranch, a Relais & chateaux luxury ranch resort in Clark, Colorado.

In 2005, Chef Jake joined Triple Creek Ranch as Executive Sous Chef and quickly became an indispensable asset to the restaurant, bringing his exquisite palate and creativity to everything he touched. In February 2006, he was named Executive Chef, a role in which he continues to delight guests with his refined, contemporary cuisine. On any given day Chef Jake can be found creating dishes such as Pan Seared Skate Wing with a Salsify Puree, or Pheasant Confit and Field Green with a Pear and White Truffle Vinaigrette. He believes the most flavorful cuisine is made simply with the best, highest quality products and he considers it part of his job to inspire and educate guests about the bountythat surrounds us in the Bitterroot Valley.

A three-night minimum stay is required for Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve holidays. This applies to all reservations for which the arrival or departure is on the holiday.

DEPOSIT AND CANCELLATION FEE

A deposit of 50% will hold your reservation; the balance will be due upon check out.

Because of our small size, cancellations or date changes affect us significantly. A last-minute cancellation or date change affords us little chance of rebooking an accommodation. We uphold a strict cancellation policy. Your deposit will be happily refunded if cancellation is made at least 60 days prior to arrival. After that, we regret that no refund is possible, regardless of the reason for non-arrival or early departure. (If your reservation was booked within the 60 day cancellation period, you may cancel within 48 hours of booking your reservation to receive a full refund. After 48 hours, we regret that no refund is possible.) Guests are welcome to send another party in their place.

In our Rocky Mountain setting, forest fires and other natural disasters are a possibility. In the event that a natural disaster requires a cancellation of your reservation, Triple Creek Ranch cannot be held responsible and refunds are not issued. Triple Creek Ranch highly recommends that you purchase trip insurance from your travel advisor or your insurance provider.

Marcus Daly Mansion

The Marcus Daly Mansion is a National Historic Site owned by the State of Montana. The mansion was the family summer home of Copper Baron, Marcus Daly, who founded the town of Hamilton, Montana, in the late 1800s. In 1886, Marcus Daly purchased the existing Anthony Chafin homestead, including the farmhouse, and had it remodeled by 1889. He renovated the residence again in 1897 to a Queen Anne style Victorian home. After Marcus Daly's death, the home was again remodeled into a Georgian-Revival style mansion. Ravalli County Museum

This former Ravalli County Courthouse, built by A.J. Gibson in 1900, served as a courthouse until 1979 when it was saved from the wrecker’s ball by a vote of the people. It now houses what is considered by many to be the finest little museum in the Northwest. Permanent collections include a Native American collection, Ricketts Museum, commemorating the development of the Rocky Mountain Laboratory, an antique kitchen, miner / trapper room, a veteran's display, Ernst Peterson photo exhibits, extensive archives, Victorian rooms, and a Railway Express agent office. Rotating exhibits in the former courtroom and a weekly Sunday Series Program at 2:00 p.m. are of historic and cultural significance.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation's Elk Country Visitor Center is proud to be one of the newest and best conservation education facilities in the Northwest. The Elk Country Visitor Center features hands-on conservation and hunting heritage exhibits for all ages. The Center also includes a Lewis and Clark display, an impressive collection of world record elk mounts, a western wildlife diorama and a state of the art conservation theater. In addition, over 400,000 acres have been opened to public access for hunting, fishing and other enjoyment.

Your Wish is their command

These guys are really fabulous. I really felt like a princess there. The land is beautiful. The cabins are really nice. The staff is just fantastic. So friendly, helpful and really goes out of their way to make your stay perfect. I went with my 93 year old mother. So it is much harder for her to get around. They did everything to make it as easy as possible for her. She even went dog sledding. Really this place is a lot of fun. The food terrific. If I had to find anything to complain about it might me to update the lodge a little...but I would really have to be picky to say that. I would not hesitate to go back and would love to go again in the summer.
